New research reveals that childhood trauma, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse or neglect, increases the risk of chronic pain and disability in adulthood. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as traumatic events before the age of 18, have long-term effects on health. A study of 826,452 adults found that exposure to multiple ACEs, especially physical abuse, further increases the risk of chronic pain. Over 1 billion children worldwide are exposed to ACEs each year, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and support systems to improve long-term health outcomes.
